ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Florida -- The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office responded on Jan. 9 to a report of a runaway emu along County Road 13.
Corporal Keisler attempted to secure the large bird, which did not respond to verbal commands and kicked multiple times with its talons before fleeing on foot, according to a news release.
After a brief chase, Keisler was able to corner the emu and secure it using a makeshift lasso. The corporal then restrained the bird’s legs to prevent further kicking and reduce the risk of injury.
“In my 25 years, I’ve never handcuffed an emu,” Keisler said. “This is definitely a new one.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Keisler made efforts to detain the emu without causing harm. The animal was safely reunited with its owners and returned home. No injuries were reported.
