A Georgia police officer and a firefighter were attacked outside a convenience store early Monday by a suspect with a sword who was fatally shot by the officer.

The incident happened at about midnight as a Wrightsville police officer and a firefighter were talking outside a gas station-convenience store, the police department stated in a social media post. A man approached the two and "began swinging a large bladed weapon," which WMAZ-TV identified as a sword

"Fearing for the life of the firefighter and in defense of himself and the firefighter, the officer was left with no other option than to use deadly force to stop the threat," the department stated.

The officer opened fire, and the suspect was struck by multiple shots. The man—identified as Diamond Seltzer—was rushed to the hospital, where he later died, according to WMAZ.

The police officer was uninjured in the attack.

"The firefighter sustained severe injuries to his arms from the bladed weapon and was transported by a deputy via patrol vehicle to a medical facility, where he is expected to survive," the department stated.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
