What to know

  • A Baltimore woman was arrested after striking and dragging a police officer about 20 feet near a road closure for the Baltimore Running Festival on Saturday.

  • Police said a 42-year-old driver ignored the officer’s order to stop and accelerated while holding a phone before fleeing the scene.

  • The officer suffered a mild skull fracture, and the driver was later located and arrested.

The woman accused of striking a police officer near the Baltimore Running Festival on Saturday had briefly spoken with the lawman before accelerating her vehicle, according to charging documents.

Despite her vehicle pulling the Baltimore Police officer roughly 20 feet before he let go and fell off, Lakia Stevenson told investigators she did not know the officer was injured, detectives wrote.

Stevenson, 42, of Baltimore, was arrested on traffic charges after leaving the scene near the 2400 block of McCulloh Street, which was blocked to traffic Saturday for the Baltimore Running Festival. Police wrote that body camera footage of the encounter showed Stevenson speaking briefly with the officer, who advises her that she can’t proceed, before she continues forward.

She was holding a “large orange cellular device” while accelerating as the officer held onto the vehicle at around 9:45 a.m., police wrote. The officer fell off, suffering a minor skull fracture, police said over the weekend. He has since been released from the hospital.

Stevenson, who was later found near the 2400 block of West Cold Spring Lane, did not have a defense attorney listed in court records Monday morning. She was being held without bond pending a bail review Monday afternoon.

She is charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident, using a cell phone while operating a vehicle in motion, negligent driving and willfully disobeying a lawful order, according to court records.
