N.J. Police Officers Help Mom Deliver Baby on Busy Roadside

A mother successfully gave birth on the side of a busy Monmouth Beach road Monday morning with the help of local police and EMS, officials said.
Monmouth Beach police officers Matthew Finnegan and Matthew Golembieski were called to the area of 4 Ocean Ave. at 6:52 a.m. for a call about a woman in active labor, according to a statement from the department.
The officers realized the baby was about to arrive, and they helped the woman deliver it, police said.
Finnegan caught the baby as it was delivered, according to Lisa Costello of Monmouth Beach EMS.
EMS arrived shortly thereafter and took over care, Costello said. Another squad member, Susan McDonald, who is a retired neonatal intensive care nurse, cut the umbilical cord.
The mother and baby were taken to a nearby hospital and both were doing well on Monday afternoon, police said.
“We are extremely proud of Ptl. Finnegan and Ptl. Golembieski for their quick thinking, calm professionalism, and compassionate actions,” Monmouth Beach Police Chief Daniel McManus said in a statement. “This is a wonderful reminder of the many ways our officers serve the community every day.”
