A Stone County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and injured Sunday during an exchange of gunfire while serving a misdemeanor warrant in Wiggins, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies were attempting to serve the warrant on one man at a Taylor Road home when another person opened fire on them.

The deputy was shot in the shoulder, while the suspected shooter was hit in the leg. Both were taken by ambulance to a Coast hospital and are expected to recover, authorities said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Attorney General’s Office for review.
