PORTAGE, IN — A local police officer was injured after walking in on an alleged residential burglary and having to struggle to take the suspect into custody, according to the arrest report.
The accused, Kristopher Edmonds, 43, who provided no permanent address, is charged with two counts of attempted burglary, attempted residential entry, invasion of privacy and two counts of resisting law enforcement, including one resulting in bodily harm to an officer, records show.
A Portage police officer said he responded around 6:30 a.m. Sunday to a residential alarm in the 3000 block of County Line Road.
After failing to contact anyone in the house, the officer said he spotted a door ajar on a garage. As he pushed the door open, a man on the inside of the garage pushed the door closed, according to the report.
The man held the door closed as the officer drew his stun gun, kicked at the door and called for help.
The officer brought his police dog to the garage and despite threats that the suspect would be bit if he did not surrender, the man, later identified as Edmonds, would not leave the garage, police said.
The officer and dog made their way into the garage and found Edmonds partially hidden in a hole. When Edmonds resisted arrest, the dog was used to help take him into custody, police said.
The officer said he sustained a leg injury during the arrest.
The homeowner said he knew Edmonds, but did not know he was on his property that morning.
Police say Edmonds has two active warrants and records show he has several active criminal cases pending in Porter County. He was still being held Wednesday morning without bond at the Porter County Jail.
