Douglas County sheriff's deputies saved a 40-year-old man after he stabbed himself inside an Irvington area apartment on Sunday.
A deputy responded to the stabbing call inside the apartment near 90th and Ida Streets around 8:30 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said in a press release. After arriving at the apartment, the deputy saw the man was bleeding heavily from his neck. The Sheriff's Office said the man told the deputy he was armed and the deputy would need to shoot him.
The deputy then called for backup. As he waited for the other deputies, the deputy continued to talk with the man to make sure he was still conscious.
After the deputies arrived, they tried to enter the room the man was in and give him aid. The Sheriff's Office said the man asked to be tased and threw his knife toward deputies. The deputies got into the room, patched the man's neck wound and stopped the bleeding. The deputies placed the man under emergency protective custody. Irvington medics took the man to a hospital, where he was stabilized.
"I am very proud of our deputies' response to this difficult situation. Their response is a testament to their professionalism and dedication to serving the citizens of Douglas County," Sheriff Aaron Hanson said in the release.
