NORWALK, CT — A Norwalk officer saved the life of a baby who was found not breathing in a kiddie pool, police said.

Police lauded Officer Daniel Vazquez for his quick thinking and for using his training in a life-or-death emergency.

The 1-year-old baby was left unattended briefly in the small pool on July 14 and was found unconscious and not breathing, police said. Family members frantically called 911 and Vazquez responded.

The child's mother was holding him when Vazquez arrived and he took the baby and immediately cleared his airway and worked to help the child breathe, police said. When medics arrived, Vazquez rushed the baby to the ambulance and helped prepare him for transport to Norwalk Hospital, police said.

"The infant made a full recovery that day and was admitted to Norwalk Hospital for further evaluation," the Norwalk Police Department said in a post on the city website. "Due to Officer Vazquez's immediate response, quick thinking, and implementation of his training, he was able to save the life of the one-year-old child and prevent a tragedy."

Vazquez was named Norwalk's Officer of the Month for saving the child's life, police said.
