Oregon State Police and Lane County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the scene.

The officer stabbed in the arm was attacked near Chase Bank at 3545 Gateway St., according to dispatch reports.

During an attempt to arrest the suspect, a Springfield officer shot him near the entrance of Happy’s Drive-Thru Carwash in the 3350 block of Gateway Street, according to police.

Dispatchers had reported that the suspect had been seen moments earlier heading north on Gateway Street past a Starbucks.

Gabe Loney, who works at a nearby Jimmy John’s sandwich shop, said a customer ran inside and alerted him and other staff to the police action nearby.

He said he walked out the store’s back door and saw about 40 police cars surrounding the carwash.

Police used a nearby lot of a McDonald’s Restaurant as a command post.

Police didn’t identify the injured officers or the man killed.
