A man armed with two knives stabbed two Springfield police officers Wednesday afternoon before police shot and killed him in the busy Gateway area off Interstate 5, according to Springfield police.
The two officers suffered significant injuries and were taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, said Springfield police Lt. George Crolly.
One officer was stabbed in the arm. It’s not known where the other officer was stabbed. They were reported in stable condition.
Police had responded to a call at 2:37 p.m. involving a disorderly man inside a business near Gateway Street and Beltline Road.
A responding officer called for backup after finding the man holding two knives and threatening to fight, according to Crolly.Oregon State Police and Lane County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the scene.
The officer stabbed in the arm was attacked near Chase Bank at 3545 Gateway St., according to dispatch reports.
During an attempt to arrest the suspect, a Springfield officer shot him near the entrance of Happy’s Drive-Thru Carwash in the 3350 block of Gateway Street, according to police.
Dispatchers had reported that the suspect had been seen moments earlier heading north on Gateway Street past a Starbucks.
Gabe Loney, who works at a nearby Jimmy John’s sandwich shop, said a customer ran inside and alerted him and other staff to the police action nearby.
He said he walked out the store’s back door and saw about 40 police cars surrounding the carwash.
Police used a nearby lot of a McDonald’s Restaurant as a command post.
Police didn’t identify the injured officers or the man killed.
