Indianapolis police are praising the efforts of a mother and daughter who helped an officer who was shot multiple times Tuesday while investigating a vehicle that had been carjacked.
The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. when an officer followed a vehicle that had been reported carjacked into an apartment complex, Mirror Indy reports. When the officer stopped the vehicle, one of the four suspects in the vehicle fled on foot.
The officer was taking the driver into custody when the two remaining passengers exited the vehicle. That's when one of the passengers opened fire, and the officer was struck at least three times.
The wounded officer returned fire, and the suspect was struck at least once. The driver and the other passenger fled into the apartment complex.
As the gunshots went off, resident Tina Jordan heard the officer call for help. She and her daughter then rushed to help.
“We (saw) shots, we ran outside to assist the officer," she told the news outlet. "We didn’t even think about the other person that was shooting. He said he needed help, and we went outside to help him.”
The wounded officer was able to apply a tourniquet, and the mother and daughter stayed until other first responders arrived.
"We put the towels on his leg that was bleeding until another officer pulled up," Jordan said. "We flagged him, and he came and took over.”
The officer was rushed to the hospital in stable condition. Police Chief Bailey said the injured officer was in a lot of pain, but he was motivated to return to duty, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Police apprehended the two suspects who fled into the apartment complex. The wounded suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
