A three-year veteran officer with the Hope Mills Police Department quickly responded when he spotted a man with a machete assaulting and seriously injuring another person.

An off-duty North Carolina police officer stopped a machete-wielding man from assaulting another person last week.

The incident happened at about 4 p.m. Friday when a Hope Mills police officer, a three-year veteran who was off duty at the time, spotted two people in a fight near a laundromat, the department stated in a news release. According to police, a man with a machete had struck the victim's head multiple times, seriously injuring the individual.

The officer quickly stepped in to stop the attack, saving the victim's life. The suspect was taken into custody by the officer and charged with attempted murder, assault inflicting serious bodily injury and other counts.

"(The officer) is a great example of the care and dedication our officers put in to helping others," the department stated.
