Video: N.J. Police Officers Catch Boy in Fire Dropped from Balcony
First responders battling a fire at an apartment complex in South Brunswick on Monday morning caught a toddler dropped from a second floor balcony by his father to escape the blaze.
Four people are being treated for smoke inhalation from a fire that has displaced at least 50 residents South Ridge Apartments in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, a police spokesman said.
Police and firefighters said the man and his son were on a second-floor balcony and told the father to drop the boy, Deputy Chief Jim Ryan said. After the cops and firefighter caught the toddler, the man then jumped into the arms of the rescuers. Both the father and toddler, who Ryan estimated was about 15 to 18 months old, were uninjured.
Flames were shooting from the second and third floor of the rear of one of the buildings when police and firefighters were called to the complex around 8:30 a.m.
Video recorded by police showed smoke pouring from the roof of one of the buildings as a ladder truck douses it with water.
Earlier, a photo showed flames and thick, black smoke were shooting from the roof.
The Red Cross has arrived and is helping displaced families, Ryan said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
