Off-Duty Ohio Police Officer Struck on Motorcycle, Assaulted
MOGADORE, Ohio – A Mogadore man is accused of using his truck to strike an off-duty police officer riding a motorcycle, then pulling over and assaulting the officer.
Jeffrey Cooper, 53, has been charged with assault on the Mogadore officer and criminal damaging, according to Akron Municipal Court records.
Cooper is accused of using his 1999 Chevrolet pickup to strike the officer’s motorcycle around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday on the 3000 block of Cleveland Avenue, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident.
The collision caused the officer, who has not been identified, to veer off the road and crash his motorcycle, resulting in minor injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
Cooper then pulled over and began to assault the officer, the sheriff’s office said. Bystanders intervened, and Cooper got in his truck and left the area.
“These issues stem from Mr. Cooper being arrested by this officer four years prior,” according to a release from the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, which represents law enforcement officers. “Mr. Cooper has filed several complaints on this officer that have been found to be without merit.”
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is on-going.
