EVERETT, Washington -- A Washington State Patrol trooper used his vehicle to stop a driver-less out-of-control car on a highway over the weekend.

The incident began when a motorist pulled over onto the shoulder of the northbound lanes to check if he had a flat tire around 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, according to a news release.

But as the driver was getting out of the car, he accidentally put the car into reverse instead of park, causing the car to go backwards, knocking the driver down, as it then started rolling south into northbound traffic.

Trooper Vanderwielen happened to be nearby and saw the wayward car and managed to intentionally crash his patrol car into the back of car, stopping it in the left lane.

"Trooper Vanderwielen possibly prevented a serious injury or fatality collision," officials said "A selfless act he didn’t hesitate to make."

The driver who was knocked over suffered minor injuries and no one else was hurt.
