Dashcam Video Shows Arkansas Trooper Hit Colleague During Pursuit

Arkansas State Police Lt. John Overman says that the incident left him with "life-long" injuries.

The Arkansas State Police is conducting an administrative review after a trooper struck one of his colleagues during a pursuit earlier this year.

Trooper Alan Aiken joined the pursuit of a vehicle spotted going more than 100 mph and weaving in and out of oncoming traffic on U.S. 412 on Jan. 11 when the incident occurred, according to The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Newly released dashcam video shows the patrol car turn off of U.S. 412 onto 48th Street before pulling onto a gravel drive where the fleeing vehicle and two other patrol cars can be seen parked.

A man in plain clothes then ran into the trooper's path as he slowed to a halt. The man, identified as Arkansas State Police as Lt. John Overman, was struck him from behind.

Aiken, who later reported that he mistook Overman for the fleeing driver, yelled at him to get on the ground and briefly pointed his handgun before recognizing him.

Overman motioned toward where the suspect had run and Aiken and other officers then chased down the driver and arrested him.

Cody Whiteeagle pleaded guilty in July to aggravated assault and fleeing and was sentenced to six years in state prison.

Overman filed a complaint against Aiken last week saying that the trooper wasn't taking the incident seriously despite the fact that it left him with "lifelong injuries."

The complaint is being investigated by the professional standards office.
