Video: D.C. Cops Pull Driver From Burning Car
Dramatic body camera video has been released of Washington, D.C. Metropolitan police officers pulling a man out of a burning car following a wreck Sunday night.
Officer Steven Hines was headed to the 5th District police station near the end of his shift around 10 p.m. when he came upon the scene of a crash on Bladensburg Road, according to WJLA-TV.
Footage from the officer's body camera shows him approach the vehicle and ask if anyone was inside.
Hines then then breaks the window to find a man inside. Despite the man's responses of "yes sir" to the officer's questions, he doesn't do what is asked.
"He wasn’t able to take his seat belt off," Hines told the news station. "He seemed out of it."
Backup arrived and other officers responded after hearing what was occurring just a half-mile from their station.
Officer Jacoby Tayor, Roberto Adams and John Hayes were in front of the station when the call came over their radios.
Adams was able to get the man's seat belt off, allowing the officers to pull the man to safety. They then determined that no one else was inside the car.
Officials said that the man was treated and released from a local hospital.
The officers' sergeant says she's proud of how the officers worked as a team to save the man's life. "It was amazing," Sgt. Nicole Brown said. "It was definitely heroism at its finest. If (Officer Hines) had arrived even maybe two to three minutes later it would have been too late."
