Greesboro Police Officer J.R. LaBarre sustained a gunshot wound to his torso while pursuing a suspect on foot.

A Greensboro, North Carolina police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed during a traffic stop Friday afternoon.

Officers J.R. LaBarre and L.S. Garrison were patrolling near Romaine Street around 4 p.m. in response to a Crime Stoppers tip about drug activity in the area when the incident occurred, according to The Greensboro News & Record.

The officers encountered a red Chevrolet Impala at a convenience store near Hickory Trails and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop.

After several blocks, the officers called for backup and the driver of the Impala pulled over and the passenger, identified as 25-year-old Carlos Keith Blackman, got out and ran.

LaBarre began to pursue the man on foot and a struggle ensued. The officer's body camera was dislodged, but audio and some video from it showed the officer had the suspect pinned to the ground and was trying to handcuff him when he escaped.

Garrison, who had just placed the driver of the Impala into his cruiser, heard gunshots and found LaBarre with a gunshot to his upper torso.

Blackman ran toward a family member’s house, where police found him with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Moses Cone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

LaBarre was treated and released Saturday morning.
