Newly released surveillance video shows a fatal shooting involving a Fairfax County, Virginia Sheriff's deputy outside a hospital earlier this year.
The video shows 29-year-old Yovani Amaya Gomez walking around the bus stop area at Inova Fairfax Hospital around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 with a "No-Smoking" sign post that he pulled out of the ground, according to WUSA-TV.
Two security guards are seen approaching the man, who strikes one of them in the head and neck. Other security guards are seen rushing up to to help subdue Gomez.
"You can see that it's bladed. It already injured the security guard. And that can be a deadly weapon," Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said. "You can kill someone with that."
A Fairfax County deputy arrived on the scene, drawing his gun to his side while walking toward the man. When Gomez spotted the deputy, he sprinted toward him and raised the sign post.
In a matter of seconds, the deputy fired the fatal shots, sending Gomez to the ground.
Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Morrogh released his report Friday and ruled the deputy acted in self-defense.
