A Nashville police officer was shot in the shoulder early Tuesday morning and the suspected gunman was found dead of an self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officer Terrance McBride and another officer were responding to a tip around 5:30 a.m. that a suspect with active warrants was inside the Cumberland Inn on West Trinity Lane, according to WTVF.
The tip indicted that there was possible drug activity inside the room and that a robbery was being planned by the suspect.
A woman answered the door when the officers knocked on the door of room 104 and she let them in and said that no one was inside. They saw no obvious signs of drug activity and began to search the room.
Police Chief Steve Anderson said that the suspect was hiding behind a closed door to the bathroom with a shotgun, and that when the officers opened the door, he fired.
McBride was struck and the officers returned fire while exiting the room.
The 3-year veteran of the department was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition.
Police were eventually able to enter the room, where they found the suspect dead in the bathroom of an apparent self-inflicted shot to the head.
Authorities believed the suspect was wanted on warrants out of New York, but were still working to confirm those details.
