A Maryland State Police trooper was able to escape her burning patrol car after a collision with another vehicle early Saturday morning.

Trooper Constance Davis, was driving her marked cruiser eastbound on Smallwood Drive in the Waldorf area shortly after 2 a.m. with the emergency lights as she was trying to stop a speeding motorist, according to The Washington Post.

At the intersection of Stone Avenue, officials said that 75-year-old James Cousins made a left turn in front of the trooper. Davis tried to avoid the car, but was unable to.

The collision occurred and caused the police cruiser to hit a tree. Just moments later, both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Witness called 911 and came to assist both drivers. Davis was able to get out of her cruiser and immediately attempted to get Cousins out of his vehicle, but was unsuccessful. Emergency crews arrived on the scene and were able to extricate the man.

The 25-year-old trooper was listed in fair condition Saturday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore while Cousins was reported in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
