N.C. Trooper Pulls Suspect From Fiery Wreck
A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper rescued a suspect from a burning vehicle after it wrecked during a high-speed pursuit Monday morning.
The chase on N.C. 65 began around 7:30 a.m. after Demareo Rivers failed to stop for an expired registration violation and fled from troopers in his 2005 BMW, according to WFMY-TV.
The pursuit ended when the suspect attempted to make a U-turn on Pine Hall Road in Walkertown and crossed the center line before hitting a Hyundai SUV head on, causing the BMW to catch fire.
Trooper N.R. White, who suffered a gash on his head after his cruiser struck a truck during the collision, exited his vehicle and pulled Rivers out of the burning car to safety.
"For him to be able to keep himself to get there at the scene of the crash and get out when he was injured with blood all over himself it out, to get out and take care of the person in the other vehicle, I think that's a great testament to his character," Sgt. Eric Naylor told the news station. "He is a hero in my eyes."
Rivers and the driver of the SUV were taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem to be treated for non-life-threatening, while White received stitches for the gash.
Highway patrol officials said that charges are currently pending against Rivers.
