A Jefferson County, Alabama Sheriff's deputy was wounded, multiple suspects were taken into custody and one remained at large following a shooting Thursday night.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit executed a drug search warrant at a home in the 2900 block of Dowell Avenue Southwest in Birmingham when the incident occurred, according to a news release.
After knocking and announcing their presence, the deputies forced entry into the home and were immediately fired upon by an unseen suspect shooting through a wall. One of the deputies was struck by the gunfire while the other deputies returned fire and dragged the wounded deputy out of the house and called for help.
The wounded deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He is expected to fully recover, but will require reconstructive knee surgery.
Three suspects fled the house on foot, who of which were taken into custody immediately.
One of the the captured suspects was shot in the shoulder and it was learned that the third suspect that fled was shot in the ankle and was able to get a ride away from the area. He remains at large and is described as a black male wearing a purple shirt.
Three suspects who remained inside the house refused to come out and Birmingham police officers, along with deputies, arrived on the scene and established a perimeter. The Sheriff’s SWAT team arrived and two of the three remaining suspects came out and were taken into custody after tear gas was deployed . The final suspect was taken into custody as the SWAT team entered the home.
Three adult males and one adult female are being questioned by detectives and charges have not yet been announced.
