Officials released dash camera video Tuesday of a fatal police-involved shooting of a murder suspect in Michigan in April.
The video shows Kentwood Police Officer Darrin Cline fire twice at 43-year-old Lamont Gulley as the suspect waves a knife at a police dog trying to subdue him, according to MLive.com.
Authorities say that Gulley fatally stabbed his wife in their Pheasant Ridge Southeast apartment on April 8.
Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth ruled that he would not charge Cline because the canine handler, Grand Rapids Police Officer Tim Hoornstra, was within about 5 feet of Gulley as the suspect attempted to stab K-9 Aero.
Forsyth stressed that anyone who watches the video should consider what Cline knew and what preceded the shooting.
"He was aware that Mr. Gulley had seriously injured someone with a knife and that he had fled the crime scene. He was also aware that Mr. Gulley was 'acting irrationally' and had repeatedly refused to follow commands to drop his weapon, had continued to flee from the officers and had continually told the officers that he was armed with a gun (when he was not) and that officers should shoot him," he said. "He was also aware that non-lethal force had been unsuccessfully deployed three times in an effort to arrest Mr. Gulley."
Gulley had a knife in one hand and a cell phone in the other during a foot pursuit and kept yelling "Shoot me, shoot me, it's a gun." Officers determined that he did not have a gun and deployed a Taser before released the police dog.
Evidence showed that Gulley attempted to commit suicide because he had a deep cut wound to the right side of his neck and wounds to his wrist.
