Mississippi Officer, K-9 Injured; Suspect Dead

A Tupelo, Mississippi police officer and his K-9 partner were attack and a suspect was fatally shot following a traffic stop Saturday night.

Officials said that 37-year-old Antwun Shumpert fled after the stop in the Lee Acres neighborhood around 10 p.m. and was found hiding under a house when a struggle ensued between him and the officer, according to WTVA.

During the struggle, Shumpert was shot several times. He was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center, but efforts to save him proved unsuccessful.

Both the officer and the police dog suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
