A Stafford County, Virginia Sheriff's deputy who was shot and wounded by a suspect last week was released from the hospital Thursday.
The unidentified deputy was shot four times in the hip, leg, arm and chest the gunman identified as Joshua Sumter on June 7, according to WJLA-TV.
The deputy underwent surgery the following day and is expected to make a full recovery.
Deputies responded to the scene around 10:15 p.m. after the suspect's mother called authorities and saw a man lying on the floor in an upstairs bedroom as they were making their way up the stairs to access the situation.
The suspect was ordered to show his hands, at which point he displayed a firearm and opened fire on deputies, hitting one.
Police obtained an arrest warrant and set up surveillance to known areas of the suspect, who was taken into custody the next day in the Thomas Jefferson Place neighborhood.
While being escorted to jail, Sumter attempted a violent escape and assaulted a deputy, but was quickly taken back into custody.
Sumter was charged with attempted capital murder, aggravated malicious wounding, four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, assault on a law enforcement officer, and escape with force.
