NYPD K-9 Detective Helps Deliver Baby Girl
An NYPD K-9 detective on patrol in Brooklyn early Tuesday morning helped a woman deliver a baby girl in her car.
Detective Lorraine Bowden was flagged down by a frantic man who told her that his wife was in labor in their car, according to a department news release.
She found the woman in active labor in the vehicle immediately put out a call over her department radio requesting EMS.
As soon as she completed her request, the mother informed her that the baby had been delivered and she quickly picked up the baby from the floor of the car and started to to clear her airway.
The umbilical cord became wrapped under the baby's arm and around her neck. Bowden was able to untangle the umbilical cord and began first aid until the newborn began to breathe on her own.
"Being a mom myself I knew I had to make sure the baby was breathing and going to bring joy to her mom and dad," Bowden said. "My training just kicked in."
EMS responded to the location and transported the mother and baby to a local hospital.
