A Sumter County, Florida Sheriff's detention deputy who was critically injured in a crash on his way to work last week died Saturday afternoon.
Deputy James Bryon Russo was involved in the single-vehicle wreck on State Road 50 in Hernando County around 5:17 a.m. Tuesday, according to The Villages-News.
His 2007 four-door Toyota entered the center median and he overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The 31-year-old was thrown from the vehicle and was flown to Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Russo began his career at the Sumter County Detention Center as a detention support specialist in December 2013 and was later promoted to a detention deputy.
"Please keep the Russo family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
