A retired New Jersey police officer was critically injured in a bicycle crash during the Police Unity Tour Monday and is not expected to survive.
Lt. Joseph Franklin, who worked for the Roxbury Police Department, was riding with a group that left from Jersey City on thier way to the National Law Enforcmeent Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. as part of Police Week, according to NJ Advanced Media.
A Facebook post from the Jersey City Police Detective's Benevolent Association Tuesday evening initially announced that Franklin had died, but has since been taken down. Law enforcmenet sources told the news outlet that the retired officer is not expected to recover.
Far Hills Police Chief Mike DeCarolis told NJ Advance Media that officers responded to Route 202 at Fox Hunt Court around 12:56 p.m. for a report of a downed cyclist. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the cyclist had already been transported to the Morristown Medical Center by an ambulance traveling with the Police Unity Tour.
The circumstances of the crash were still unclear and officers were still collecting statements.
