California Highway Patrol officers were led on a pursuit on the Bay Bridge Sunday morning by a wayward Chihuahua.

Units spotted the tiny dog on the bridge's north side catwalk heading toward San Francisco, prompting an officer to stop traffic shortly after 7 a.m., according to KNBC-TV.

CHP San Francisco spokesman Officer Vu Williams said that a motorcycle officer attempted to pick up the Chihuahua, but it took off running onto the bridge. A video shows the motorcycle officer pursuing the dog as it ran across multiple lanes.

As the black Chihuahua kept officers in pursuit, the motorcycle officer and other officers in a patrol car boxed in the dog and an officer distracted the animal with a jacket while another scooped it up.

Williams said that the chase and rescue lasted roughly five minutes.

The dog has been picked up by the San Francisco County's Department of Animal Care and Control -- whose employees nicknamed it "Ponch," after Erik Estrada's character in the 1970s TV hit, "CHiPs."

Officials are checking to see if the dog has been microchipped and are seeking the public's assistance in reuniting the Chihuahua with its owner.

If the dog isn't claimed in seven days, it will be put up for adoption.
