Virginia State Police officials say that a man attacked a trooper on a highway Monday afternoon.

Washington State resident Jeremy P. Tylock was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer, resisting arrest, felony assault of a police officer and being a pedestrian on the interstate, according to The News Leader.

Tylock was spotted on Interstate 81 throughout Monday. At times he was seen sleeping and each time the man was told to leave the interstate.

At approximately 4:40 p.m., Trooper J.D. Cash responded to another call for the man walking along the shoulder of I-81 and pulled his patrol car onto the shoulder behind Tylock.

Officials said that as Cash exited his cruiser, Tylock dropped his backpack and rushed the trooper. A struggle ensued and Tylock allegedly punched Cash in the face as the fight went into the northbound lanes of the highway.

Police said oncoming vehicles had to swerve and stop to avoid the pair.

Lt. C.R. Vandevander with the Middle River Regional Jail spotted the incident five minutes into the struggle and assisted the trooper with handcuffing Tylock.

Augusta County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and took Tylock to Middle River Regional Jail.

Neither the suspect or the trooper were injured in the struggle.
