A New Jersey State Police trooper has succumbed to injuries he suffered after being struck at the scene of a crash Monday night.

Trooper Sean Cullen had responded to the two-vehicle crash on southbound 295 in Deptford Township around 8:15 p.m., according to a state police news release.

The 31-year-old trooper was walking near the crash -- where there was a car on fire and several fire and police vehicles present with emergency lights activated -- when he was struck by a vehicle passing the scene.

Officials said that the 22-year-old woman behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck Cullen sopped immediately and cooperated with investigators.

Cullen sustained severe injuries to his head and was airlifted to Cooper hospital in Camden where he was pronounced dead shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Family members and numerous troopers and law enforcement personnel from several different agencies held vigil late into the night at the hospital and were notified of the trooper's death by Colonel Rick Fuentes.

The two-year veteran of the force was a member of the 154th State Police Class and was stationed at Bellmawr Station. He previously served with the Westampton Township Police Department for two year.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
