Louisiana Deputy Critical; Suspect in Custody

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy was critically wounded by a suspect in New Orleans Tuesday morning.

Deputy Stephen Arnold was working with a DEA task force serving a warrant when the suspect opened fire, according to WDSU-TV.

The 35-year-old deputy was shot once in the neck and four times in his body. He was transported to University Medical Center for treatment and was listed in critical but stable condition.

Arnold stopped breathing earlier Tuesday morning and a medical team is working to determine if he suffered any neurological damage.

The shooting was reported around 6:10 a.m. in the 5300 block of Douglas Street in the Lower Ninth Ward.

One person -- who officials called a suspect in the investigation -- was taken into custody at the scene.
