Las Vegas police on Monday released body camera video from the Dec. 31 fatal shooting of a fugitive who refused to obey officers' commands.
Officers responded to a call around 2:04 p.m. for a fugitive reported to be possibly armed in the area of Monaco Cove after he fled U.S. Marshals searching for him, according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
"Officers from the Enterprise Area Command quickly arrived and set up a perimeter to contain Childress," Undersheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters.
After the suspect -- identified as Keith Childress -- was spotted, Sgt. Robert Bohanon and Officer Blake Wolford confronted him. Bohanon can be heard on the video saying, "He's got something in his hand."
It was ultimately learned that Childress was holding a cell phone at the time he was shot, though a gun in the friend's car he previously fled.
"This is our first officer-involved shooting where the suspect didn't have a weapon in over two years," McMahill said.
Childress didn't move and ignored a total of about 24 commands from Bohanon over the course of two minutes to "Surrender," "Drop the gun," and "Get on the ground."
Just before officers opened fire on the man, Bohanon told him: "If you advance at us, you will be shot."
Bohanon fired four rounds and Wolford fired five as Childress approached them. He was struck five times -- three times in the chest, once in the hand and once in the thigh -- but continued to move forward.
He was cuffed and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The shooting is still under investigation.
