Tennessee Deputy Saved by Bulletproof Vest

Sumner County Deputy Philip Douglas was saved by his bulletproof vest after he was shot in the chest Wednesday night.

A Sumner County, Tennessee Sheriff's deputy was saved by his bulletproof vest after he was shot in the chest Wednesday night.

Deputy Philip Douglas responded to a domestic dispute at a home on Old Highway 31 in Bethpage around 5:30 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to WTVF.

Officials said that when the deputy exited his vehicle, 50-year-old James Cummins opened fire on him. Douglas was able to return fire, but was struck in the chest. He was vest was able to spare him from serious injury.

Douglas been with the sheriff's office for years, but recently became a deputy about a year and a half ago.

"The deputy (Douglas) is fantastic. He's one of the very best," Chief Deputy Aaron Pickard told the news station. "He has some of the best tactics and he’s one of the most well-prepared that we have."

A second deputy arrived on the scene and after a brief break in gunfire, Cummins was taken into custody and held on a $750,000 bond.
