Colo. Officer Saved by Vest; Gunman Sought

A Commerce City police officer was shot in his chest during a traffic early Sunday morning.

A police officer in Commerce City, Colorado was saved by his bulletproof vest after he was shot during a traffic early Sunday morning and the gunman is being sought.

While the officer's ballistic vest stopped the bullet fired from close range at his chest, he still sustained serious injuries from the impact, according to KMGH-TV.

The officer, who was able to return fire, has since been treated and released from the hospital.

A manhunt was launched for the gunman, who was described as a white man in his late-40s or early-50s. Officials said that the man has brown hair, a thin build and was wearing glasses and a black and white scarf around his neck at the time of the shooting.

The suspect was driving a maroon Nissan Pathfinder during the incident which may have suffered minor damage on the right rear bumper, as well as damage from shots fired by the officer.

The officer has been with the Commerce City Police Department for more than a decade, and been in law enforcement for at least 15 years.

The incident is currently under investigation.
