The police chief in Marlin, Texas was critically wounded after he was shot while working an off-duty security job at a bar early Sunday morning.

Marlin Police Chief Darrell Allen suffered a life-threatening head wound after a man shot him around 1:22 a.m. during an altercation at the Laid Back Lounge II in Temple, according to The Temple Daily Telegram.

The 43-year-old police chief was transported to Baylor Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Derrick Wayne Gamble was arrested and charged with aggravated assault against a peace officer, a first-degree felony.

Allen was working with another off-duty Marlin police officer at the bar when he attempted to detain the 24-year-old prior to the shooting.

Temple Police Sgt. Allen Teston told reporters that Gamble "pulled a gun from his jacket and shot the chief." Teston said that police have received calls in the past about violence at the bar.

"We've had some violent offenses there at that location," Teston said. "Our presence has not stopped any of it."

Temple Police and the Texas Rangers are currently investigating the shooting.
