A Montcalm County, Michigan Sheriff's deputy who was shot and wounded with a crossbow earlier this month was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

Deputy Michael Kotenko will continue his recovery at home and is expected to make a full recovery after leaving the Spectrum/Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, according to The Daily News.

"On behalf of the Kotenko family and the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office, we are happy to announce that Deputy Mike Kotenko has been released from the hospital and will continue his recovery at home," Sheriff Bill Barnwell stated in a press release.

Around 11:50 p.m. on Oct. 9, the 14-year veteran of the department responded to a residence in the 8000 block of West Townline Lake Road with four Michigan State troopers to arrest Travis Quay on assault charges.

While attempting to arrest Quay, officials said that he shot at the officers with his crossbow, striking Kotenko in his side. The troopers returned fire, killing Quay.

Deputies and troopers tended to the deputy until Montcalm County EMS arrived and transported him to the Lakeview Airport where he was then airlifted to the hospital.

"The family has asked that (Kotenko) be given privacy during this time of healing," Barnwell stated. "They also wish to express their extreme gratitude to the public for the cards and support Mike has received."

An investigation into the incident is currently underway by the Michigan State Police.
