A Los Angeles police sergeant was struck by a driver while searching for a robbery suspect early Tuesday morning.
The sergeant was assisting other officers in the search in the area of Eldridge Avenue and Hubbard Street in the Sylmar neighborhood around 1:30 a.m. when he was struck as he stood in the street, according to KCBS-TV.
Paramedics transported the 20-year veteran of the force to a local hospital for treatment of a serious head injury and broken bones. Officials said the sergeant was alert and talking with fellow colleagues.
"I just left the hospital after visiting with our injured Sgt. He's in great spirits, surrounded by friends & family on the road to recovery," Police Chief Charlie Beck said in a post on Twitter.
Police said the robbery suspect has not been located and the driver who struck the officer was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
