Officials say that Marquis Cantland drew a gun and waited for a pursuing officer to round the corner.

A robbery suspect who was waiting to ambush a Philadelphia police officer was shot Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to a call for a robbery in progress at 60th and Spruce streets around 6 a.m. when the incident occurred, according to WPVI-TV.

Capt. Anthony Ginaldi told the news station that officers from the 18th District searching the area for someone who was robbed at gunpoint while walking to work spotted a person matching the suspect's description in the 200 block of Edgewood Street.

The suspect, identified as Marquis Cantland, fled on foot when he saw police. One officer pursued the man on foot while his partner chased him in his patrol car.

Cantland then allegedly pulled out a gun and waited for the officer pursuing him on foot.

The officer in the patrol car spotted him and ordered him to drop his weapon multiple times as he continued to wait for the officer to turn the corner. When he failed to follow orders, the officer fired one, striking the man in the stomach.

Cantland was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

The robbery victim and the officers involved in the pursuit were uninjured.

Police recovered the suspect's weapon from the scene and that the suspect has identified it as the weapon he used in the robbery.
