A Brooklyn Center, Minn. police officer spent his last day on the job giving out gift cards he purchased with his own money.

Commander Brian Peters bought the gift cards valued at $500 -- the same amount he would earn in one day -- from Target and Cub Foods and gave them out to passersby, according to KARE-TV.

"I am just looking for anyone that may be coming in with kids and surprise them with an extra $50 to get some groceries," he told the news station. "The citizens and city have been wonderful to me. I am very blessed so it feels good to always give back."

While searching for people he believed most deserving of the gift, he met Shaundra Lindsay and three of her children at the metro transit stop.

"I got a little scared but he came to me with some good news," she said. "I didn't know what he was coming over here to me for. It was a surprise. He blessed us and I am really happy about that."

Lindsay told the news station she will use the gift cards to purchase food, socks and other essentials for her children before they head back to school.

Peters, who had worked with the police department 14 years, is leaving the force after accepting a position with Target as the manager at the company's Global Crisis Center located in Minneapolis.
