An Albuquerque police officer efforts to resuscitate an unconscious baby last month were captured on lapel video.
Officer Martin Smith was called to home in the Northeast Heights around 1 p.m. on May 14 and found a 7-month-old baby girl unresponsive and the family distraught, according to KOAT-TV.
With a few light breaths and rubs to the child's chest, Smith was able to revive her.
"I started rubbing her chest and blowing in her face ... and she started coming out of it," he told the news station.
Seconds later, the baby's fingers started to move. The officer lightly tapped her chest until he saw her eyes open.
"If it wasn't for him, who knows what the outcome of the situation could have been," Alyssia Rios, the girl's mother, said. "It really comforted me that he helped out so much. I felt relieved."
Smith, a veteran officer, said his actions were second nature and something he learned a long time ago.
"Anyone who's had that training would go into autopilot and start responding," he said. "That's what makes doing this job good. That's the good part of it."
The baby was treated at a local hospital and was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and is now on medication.
