Officials in Austin, Texas say a man intentionally set his car on fire early Tuesday morning, causing an explosion that injured himself and two police officers.
The officers responded to a Food Mart near Stassney Lane and Interstate 35 around 2 a.m. after the man called 911 and told a dispatcher he might harm himself by setting his car on fire, according to The American-Statesman.
As the officers approached the man, he jumped into his vehicle and ignited fuel that fire investigators say was most likely gasoline. The power of the explosion threw the officers backwards and left the suicidal man with serious burns.
Both of the officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor burns to their arms and have since been released.
The burned man is being treated at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
Officials said the man will likely be charged with first-degree felony arson because the fire injured other individuals.
