A Gautier, Miss. police officer considers himself lucky after a lightning bolt narrowly missed his cruiser last week.
Sgt. Mark Rodriguez was driving on Interstate 10 in Jackson County through bad weather on the morning of May 26 when a sudden flash appeared just feet in front of him.
Footage from the vehicle's dashboard camera shows the lightning land in front of the cruiser as it drove across a bridge.
"The lightning struck approximately 30 feet from me, striking the bridge and actually causing damage to the bridge. I saw the concrete pieces flying," Rodriquez told NBC News. "The flash was very bright. It didn't blind me; it just kind of made my eyes blurry for a moment."
A few days later, Rodriguez returned to the bridge over the Tchoutacabouffa River and took photos of the concrete that had crumbled off of it.
