A Pampa, Texas police officer is recovering following surgery after being shot in the face on Monday.

Sgt. Houston Gass underwent jaw reconstruction surgery at University Medical Center in Lubbock after he was wounded by a suspect while responding to a call, according to KAMC-TV.

Gass was initially airlifted to a hospital in Amarillo before being flown to UMC.

"He's got a long road to recovery ahead of him, but hes alive, and we're praising god for that," the officer's friend and pastor, Dallas Stringer, told the news station. "He's not going to let this feat dictate him. It's not going to stop him from going back to work."

Police say the gunman barricaded himself in the house police were called too, which triggered a four and half hour standoff. The suspect, Ryan John Kelley, was taken into police custody.

The Pampa community has rallied behind Gass and his wife, starting fundraisers and pledging to match the donations they receive. The Lubbock Police Department is also offering their time and money to assist the family.
