A Cascade County, Mont. Sheriff's deputy was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday afternoon.
Deputy Joe Dunn, 33, was hit by a driver on Highway 89 near Belt around 3:30 p.m., according to KRTV.
Officials said that after the deputy was hit, the suspect drove toward Great Falls while being pursued by law enforcement officers. Speeds reportedly reached 100 mph before the pursuit came to an end in Black Eagle, when Great Falls police apprehended the suspect.
The injured deputy was flown to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Dunn was a 2-year, 5-month veteran of the Sheriff's Office and a Marine Corps Veteran who served his country in Afghanistan.
"Our thoughts go out to all the deputies who put themselves in danger when they are out on patrol," Cascade County Commissioner Joe Briggs said. "It's a ery difficult situation for the department. We're thinking about all of the deputies and their families."
The Montana Highway Patrol and Great Falls Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
Dunn is survived by his parents, two siblings, a wife and two small children.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
