One suspect was arrested and two were being sought after an off-duty D.C. Metropolitan Police detective was shot and wounded early Wednesday morning.

Officials say that the detective was shot shortly before 3 a.m. in the 4100 block of Southern Avenue, according to WJLA-TV.

The officer was in stable condition at a local hospital after undergoing surgery.

The Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the shooting occurred after three suspects approached the off-duty detective's vehicle and attempted to take it.

When the officer fled, the armed suspects opened fire.

The three suspects were seen traveling in a burgundy Nissan Altima, which crashed along the 5500 block of Hunt Place NE, where it was abandoned.

One of the suspects was arrested, but police are still searching the area of the crash for two others.

The shooting is currently under investigation.
