Police shot at, chased and captured a suspect after an officer was nearly run over in a stolen car Wednesday morning.
No one was hurt when Officer H.G. Taylor fired four shots as the suspect revved the car's engine and tried to run him over following a traffic stop just before 8:30 a.m. at Leonid Road and Dunn Avenue, said Assistant Chief Chris Butler. The suspect, who had a semi-automatic handgun in the car but did not apparently point it at the officer, drove off and was apprehended following a three-mile pursuit.
The chase ended in the 1400 block of Broward Road west of Interstate 95 where a second officer forced the suspect's car off the road. As the suspect ran, an attempt to stun him with a Taser failed, Butler said.
The suspect, who has not been identified but Butler said is a felon, was alone in the stolen vehicle.
Two of the officer's bullets struck the car, which was reported stolen in June.
Broward Road was closed off to through traffic during the investigation but should be reopened about 12:30 p.m.
Taylor has been an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for 5 1/2 years.
