WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- A man who allegedly punched a police officer in the face during a traffic stop Thursday morning has been charged with assault, police said.
Jamaal Lance, 28, was pulled over about 2 a.m. at the intersection of Campbell and Elm for motor vehicle violations, police said. When an officer asked him to produce his licence, he became belligerent, police said.
Lance allegedly exited his vehicle and "squared off in a boxer's stance against officers while approaching the officers in a threatening manner," a police report said.
Two officers attempted to subdue Lance and he punched one of them in the face, police said. The officers struggled with Lance and were eventually able to take him into custody.
Both officers sustained scrapes and cuts during the struggle, police said. One of the officers sustained a broken finger, police said.
Lance was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer and several motor vehicle violations. He's being held on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, according to police.
