Video: Two Men Killed in Calif. Police Pursuit

July 2, 2014
Police have released footage of a fatal pursuit that ended when the suspect's car erupted in flames.

Two people were killed after fleeing from San Marcos police around 3 a.m. on June 23, according to city officials.

Police suspected a driver of driving while impaired and tried to pull that person over, but the driver fled at "a high rate of speed" in the residential Rio Vista neighborhood, officials said. The driver's Ford pickup burst into flames after crashing into the landscaping in the center of a roundabout.

Chase Stapp, an assistant chief at the San Marcos Police Department, said the pursuit involved several officers and lasted around five minutes.

The driver and the passenger, 43-year-old Charles Lee Crayton, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the city. Police have not been able to identify the driver because of the condition of the body after the fire, Stapp said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Stapp said.

He said the department will also conduct an internal review of the pursuit to determine whether any policies were violated.
