A man was critically injured during a Deerfield Beach fire that also injured a deputy early Saturday, according to a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman.
The fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m. in an apartment in the Tivoli Lakes development just east of Interstate 95 and north of Southwest Tenth Street.
A Broward Sheriff's deputy tried to rescue the resident in the burning unit and received minor injuries trying to do so. He was treated at Broward Health North, according to fire-rescue spokesman Mike Jachles.
The resident sustained third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body and was airlifted to the Jackson Memorial Burn Center in Miami from Broward Health North.
Firefighters found him outside the fully-engulfed unit when they arrived. They rescued the man's dog from inside the burning apartment and two people from a balcony above that unit.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to put the fire out. The blaze gutted the burning apartment and damaged two adjacent units with smoke damage, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.
Four people were displaced from their homes. The American Red Cross was assisting them with temporary accommodations.
The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated.
